San Pedro Mechanics?
I have come to the conclusion that my mechanic, which does good work, is a complete ripoff. The place I've been going to is on Pacific, and is a family run place. I do not believe in going to dealerships, because they will always find a way to charge top dollar. But after a recent oil change that cost me $40, I have come to my senses.
So, I am taking suggestions from people in the neighborhood who might know other places to go. Let's hear your stories, good and bad, about mechanics in San Pedro. I know we've all got them.

Did your mechanic use synthetic oil during the change? If so, $40 is actually a good deal - compared to what you would get from other mechanics. Most other mechanics would charge $60.
If it was just regular oil, then yeah you were absolutely ripped off. That should only cost about $20.
Why don't you learn how to change your own oil? It's very easy and cost effective.
thanks, but i know how to do it. to be honest, i'm really not interested in dragging the oil to a recycling center and putting on a filter myself, especially when it can be done for 20 bucks. it's a waste of time and money.
The Shell oil change place on 7th Street is pretty good for changes. Reliable, no cock-ups and they throw in a free car wash at the place on Gaffey between 7th & 8th. I think on Wednesday's it's $5 off, too.
I had some really poor experiences dealing with Joe Furgel, but they've gone out of business. I've also had strangely mixed experiences with Butch's auto repair down near Gaffey and channel. I've got a "new car" now, and I'm kind of glad I don't have to navigate the maze of mechanic recommendations and un-recommendations of San Pedro mechanics for a few years.
I use Harbor Auto on Pacific and find them reliable if a bit, I don't know, shifty (they never offer to show me replaced parts, e.g.) I've been interested in finding a different mechanic myself so I'll keep an eye on this. Ditto the Shell oil change place.
Oooh! I will try the Shell place for oil changes. I had been going to Jerzy Boys for the $40 oil/lube/wash trifecta. I know you're asking for Pedro mechanics, but if you find yourself needing to get some significant ($$) work done I would recommend Bothwell's in Torrance. They are stand up guys ("want your old parts? no problem!") and if you have an old clunker you're just trying to keep running they understand that and won't try and convince you that your '89 civic needs a $4000 brake job. I've been going there for years and they've seen me through my rusted buckets to my almost new nice car I now drive.
warning: they are very busy and can get backlogged by a few days.
Stop your whining. Prices go up and $40 isn't bad for an oil change especially if your time is sooooo valuable. These people have to eat too and liberals have made this an expensive place to do business.
$40 is a high price to pay for an oil change. I pay between $25-30 for my oil changes, and I know I could probably pay a little less than that if I like.
How have liberals made "this" an expensive place to do busines?
I can highly recommend San Pedro based "Butch's Auto" - the mechanics, Butch and his partner, Rob are always professional and informative in regards to your car and the issues one is having with it. They never "rush" the customer in/out - I have recommended Butch's Auto to several people through the years and all have been very satisfied.
Harbor Auto was the place I went to. You are correct, they have the prerogative to charge whatever they want. But given that I've seen ads for $20 oil changes, I don't consider it "whining". It's more like "not getting ripped off."
Harbor Auto charged about $500 for a 60,000 mile service. That seemed a bit high too. So, if you don't mind, I'll take my business elsewhere.
Butch's Auto it is.
I'm fascinated by the "liberals have made this an expensive place to do business" that went unexplained. I know its not the focus of this post but as a liberal I want to know what I'm doing to take food out of an innocent small businessman's babys mouth.
To get to the focus of the post, I know they use bargain basement filters and oil but Jiffy Lube has always been cost competitive for my not very sensitive Jeep. They always try to hustle me for extra work but so does the guy at the car wash, waddya gonna do
Just to clarify, I went to Harbor auto and am a died in the wool bleeding heart. The guy telling you to stop whining is someone else. $40 is indeed entirely too expensive.

Blogger.com really needs to figure out a way for anons to identify themselves from other anons if they want to. My moniker is relatively generic I'll grant you but it does provide some distinction from the learned Calamari, Banditos Yanquis, and of course the ever present anons.
If only an anon could through assistance from the blogger.com have a way to separate him, herself, themselves (suggesting of course the presence of a mass conspiracy here at Life on the Edge). I suppose for now all the anon will have is the time of their post and the tone of their rant.
I really wish people wouldn't post as anons, unless they have to. Every experience I've had in internet based communications has led me to believe that anonymity leads to all kinds of bs and crazy talk.
Then again, I'm also totally comfortable with the concept of the panopticon.
Delete anonymous comments. That'll learn'em.
Can't delete them. I know who some of the anons are, and they're people who's community roles might be compromised by their honest words here. So there's a benefit, and I don't want to lose that benefit.
BS and crazy talk are things you will always have to deal with on the Net to some degree. But I wish that the anons would pick nicknames and use them so that we could at least tell them apart. Because otherwise it's like, "I disagree with what Anonymous said about Anonymous' first message where he called Anonymous a bleeding heart liberal moron." Pick a nickname, guys!
Nicknames would be good for clarity's sake. I try to tell the anons apart, but it gets confusing.
You can call me Einar.
Back to the point, I've been overcharged for a break job at Deeters. Had to take the truck back three times within three days to get it right. It's not a good feeling when your breaks are in question. I go to Bothwell's now. They are "real" mechanics, very busy, and you get what you professional service.
