Wow! Holy Public Outcry, Batman!

Noticed this courtesy of The Aesthetic. There is an article in the Breeze about a homeowner in RHE going to jail for not properly permitting his home improvements. Well, the article has 527 comments going right now. Fun reading.

UPDATE - the amount of comments has spawned a meta-article, about the commentary itself. Welcome to media 2.0, folks. The meta-article has 59 of its own comments.

I can understand the shock over the guys being sent to jail for 6 months over a fence in these days of Nicole Richie multi hour DUI jail terms, but the gentleman did expand his property onto public (yours and mine - understanding that I don't live in RHE and don't ride a horse)property by tearing down the original and replacing it with a new fence.

The LA Times article describes months of negotiations with the City over potential remedies but all in all it sounds like a guy who worked very hard ???, bought a house in a very pricey neighborhood, built a new home, tore down a termite impacted publicly owned fence (a public service) and when replacing it decided to expand his extremely valuable real estate by taking it away from the public.

My sympathy for this guy is similar to the sympathy I feel for the residents of Malibu who spend millions in legal fees trying to prevent public access to the publicly owned beaches in front of their homes. Public land is public land and if I wanted to use it I should be able to use it.

It is unfortunate that this guy went to jail and used up my tax dollars by eating the three square meals a day, but how else could they punish what appears to have been his unwillingness to compromise with the law.

Strange that this thread out of the many on this blog would inspire me to get so long winded and apologies of course for ranting.
