speaking of development, how long do you suppose it will it be until every shack in Point Fermin is "remodeled" (read: part of one wall left standing while a new building is constructed around it)? the McMansions going up on Paseo Del Mar are marvelous examples of some sort of demon anti-architecture, borrowing details from several different styles ("howdy neighbor! love the Roman columns and stucco!"), putting them all into the shake-and-bake bag and dumping the results 10 feet from the sidewalk.
and have you been to visit the prefab monstrosity recently built on the lot East of Walkers? we've been talking to the people who own the lot for years, and they are fine folks, but sweet bleeding jesus on the cross - what have they done?! many in the neighborhood opposed the building (most notably the malicious jackass in the two-story house directly north of the lot - but he's another story altogether), but i always defended the owners, saying they were good people, and hell, it's their land (which they bought for a very small sum - probably the cause of a lot of the neighborhood jealousy). but damn man, the three mobile homes perched on the weird concrete base that sprung up there are fugly to the extreme. a real head-scratcher, that.
mega-lego-lofts going up downtown is to be expected, i suppose. if there's one thing California municipalities despise, it's buildings more than 30 years old. but this "if one story is good, three stories must be real good!" kind of residential buildup is troubling. one day you're going to drive down to the end of Gaffey or Pacific and find a guarded gate, and a Malibu Colony East sign.
well, look for me up at Angel's Gate...i'll be running the binocular/RPG concession from my home/van.

I was just having a conversation with an artist up here at the gate yesterday about the same subject. She was saying that she had just come from a meeting where a new neighbor of her friend was applying for a permit to tear down their house 1 block in from Paseo, with the intention of building a multi-storey McMansion with over 4000 feet of interior space that comes right up to the property line.
There is an irony in this. The Pt. Fermin/Paseo area folks have been very resistant to incursion from San Pedro's poorer (er.. not-white) classes for years and years, most notably in their quashing of the soccer field at White Point (I guess the noise pollution from the kind of people who yell Goaaallll! was just too much for them). So the folks who are moving into the area are from out of town and don't give a rats ass for much besides a good deal and an opportunity to live in a stucco covered, air conditioned monster, right near the coast.
I don't know about the legality of this, but it would be great if the city, or the homeowner's associations could get together and make big chunks of Pedro no stucco zones, requiring new construction to maintain the character of the old construction. It's funny, I'd be all You Go Girl! if my neighbor wanted to build a Neutra house or a neo-brutalist bunker (I like architecture), but every time I see the stucco go up, my teeth grate and I want to stop by your RPG concession for a "snack".
yeah, i'm not opposed to people building or improving, but i guess i'm coming across that way. it's the monsterization and accompanying uglification of everything that gets under my skin.
there's a place on Paseo that looks like the owner just pointed at pictures from a bunch of different magazines or catalogs and said, "yeah, give me a couple of them things!" it's like some third graders designed it in a computer program. if only they'd deleted it...
I'm not against modernisation either, it's like some people grew up with lead in their drinking water supply. I don't know what makes people think "I need all of this junk... now I need a place to keep all of this crap... a really big one!"
will I live 50 ft away form this pice of s#$t and when i wake-up i see this. it has takein what view i had.
