The News From Pedro
Today is one of those days when there's lots of stories in the Breeze about our little burg. Here we go!
Bridge to Breakwater? Not anymore it isn't. Are we watching the de-de-localisation of the project goals begin and the push from downtown for the focus on regional issues begin with the name change to Los Angeles Waterfront? Or are they just trying to distance themselves from this moron? Hell maybe it's a good thing. If they want to think about it as the Los Angeles Waterfront, maybe that means that we could be looking at a move towards quality development, and away from quantity. Just don't promise me any more McJobs.
There's more heat on the Ponte Vista/New High School/Western Avenue Traffic Conundrum fire today, with various groups coming out against the location of the new high school. We need another high school, there's no doubt there, it's just where to put the kids. I personally like the idea of putting the school on the 18 acre Harbor College driving range if the Navy land doesn't work out. It eliminates 18 acres of yuppie blight, which is always a good idea in my opinion, and at the same time might bring attention to the crumbling infrastructure and programs at Harbor College.
My favourite non-sensical reasoning from the anti-high school crowd? Thanks Angie Papadakis for this gem:
"I don't think (Ponte Vista) would be a viable project for anybody, to have high school kids right there next to the senior housing," said Papadakis, a longtime Los Angeles County Board of Education trustee.
Why? Are high school kids too crazy? Will dirty old men be having heart attacks at the sight of teenage lolitas? Will the kids be unable to get any school work done, confronted by an overwhelming cloud of old people smells? Explain thyself, Angie?
An lastly, apparently fees at Recreation and Parks facilities are disturbingly uneven across the city. An audit of park fees by City Controller Laura Chick reveals a suprising degree of variance between fees for the same services at different parks. Apparently Bogdonovich Park charges kids $110 to play baseball and Lafayette park is only charging $35. Where's the love Bogdonovich Park? Why the high fees? San Pedro has a bevy of baseball diamonds, I'd imagine fees would be low, considering all of the competition.

Today someone who should probably remain nameless (only Noel is idiot enough to use his real name on blogs, as my younger son never fails to point out) suggested "Bay of Smokes"
I prefer Dr. John Miller's brilliant "Diesel Death Zone". Truth in advertising says I. Can't you just see the sign on the 110?
There are plenty of good reasons not to build any of that garbage at that site--the high school (in a time of declining enrollments) or the road-clogging housing development. But the proximity of high school kids to old people? Huh, whuh? When did this become a bad thing?
But I still say build the high school at the DiCarlo site, just because it's the only way to fend off that Target that we'll get otherwise. A big-box, nonunion, local business killer with red-state politics right here in our little town? Oh, happy day. First the Sav-On, now this!
Oh, and what is the story with that Ion site anyway? Is there a connection to the backers of the project, or is it just some random 'net opportunist who didn't get the memo about the dotcom bubble having burst four years ago?
I used to be in favour of seeing a Target on the DiCarlo site, given that Target has one of the most amazing grant programs for local communities in all of corporate America. Individual store mangagers get to create legitimate links between their giving program, the store and local community organisations. But after that denial of morning after birth control policy went into affect - they can stay out of my town, thank you.
The Ion guy is apparently a local dude (local to the area, maybe not San Pedro) who thinks he's organising the greatest event ever. It's pathetic, because he's trying to get the Port and city to give him permits, all the while cybersquatting on the most likely web address for their most high profile project. He's been at meetings, griping and whining about how no one supports him, while he's trying to do some big favour for everyone.
What immediately sinks his boat in my opinion, is his enthusiasim for having people (you know, the kids) skateboard the course. There's something uninformed and desperate about that tack that just makes me wonder what's going on in his head, and who dropped him on it.
The other thing abouit his event, is that the distance is too short for competitive runners, so they won't be into the event. Apparently there are certain target distances that make events like that attractive to those communities (sorry to be vague, this was explained to me a while back and I'm fuzzy on details), and this proposed event doesn't make the cut.
Today somebody suggested "Bay of Blowing Smoke". That led me to "Bay of Blowing Blue Smoke", but maybe that's too unsubtle.
Can you be too unsubtle in this arena?
A corporate grant program, no matter how "amazing," seems like a piss-poor consolation prize for driving the final nail into the coffin of any revitalization of downtown for small business, but whatevs.

Placing a Highschool at Ponte Vista would be a disaster. Not only do you have senior housing but you have young kids from Dodson walking to the bus stop getting acosted by high school punks
