New ILWU anti-diesel pollution initiative
Both the Daily Breeze and the Long Beach Press Telegram are covering the ILWU's new initiative to curb diesel pollution at the Port.

ILWU International President James Spinosa said union workers not only work in conditions involving high-pollution levels at the ports, but they also often go home to the adjacent communities.

We can only hope that this helps to move the agenda from talk to effective action.
Haven't seen any yet, however.
At the same "Faster Freight, Cleaner Air" conference there were strong speeches from the federal EPA, the California Air Resources Board, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Harbor Commission President S. David Freeman about the clear and present danger to public health, and the need to begin effective measures to clean it up.
Councilwoman Hahn gave a very strong speech. About half way through her speech I passed Sergio Carillo a note saying "It's scary. She sounds like Dr. John Miller or Noel Park".
Actions speak louder than word, however. We have to find ways to keep ratcheting up the pressure until they make good on all of these fine words.
