Ponte Vista continues...
According to todays Breeze, Councilwoman Hahn is now advocating a year long study of the proposed Bisno development. From where I'm sitting this seems more like a delaying/obfuscating tactic meant to derail planning of the high school than a necessary process. If a hold gets put on anything, it should be Bisno's plans, which should come after the high school site is planned.

Gee, if the developer pays for the plan, I wonder how the results will come out?
The way I understand it, this would be a city-led process, with standardized steps and community outreach. Not that this process is designed to result in an outcome that would be acceptable to the majority of the local residents, of course - just meant to provide a semplance of public due process. Most public process is smoke and mirrors.
The game is played:
Developer proposes density way beyond what he actually intends to build (or has any hope of being approved for).
Community responds with density way below what they have any actual hope of effecting.
"Public process" takes place, with much debate, grandstanding, threatening and strategizing.
Developer ends up achieving something close to what they actually want and expect.
Lack of sincerity and gamesmanship on all sides is a sign of where we stand in the evolutionary process of acheiving a true social consciousness.
Alas, all too true.
This also holds true for our Neighborhood Councils, Port Community Advisory Committee, School Based Management Councils, Park Advisory Boards, and all of the other opportunities for the "semblance of public due process."
"Smoke and mirrors" indeed.
The challenge ofr all of us is how to break out of this box.
High school is way worse than Ponte Vista. Kids from Gang Neighborhoods will now be in Pedro
Kids from gang neighborhoods in Pedro? Unthinkable! Well, maybe we can introduce them to all those white-boy gangsters around 25th and Alma, and they can have a quilting bee or something.
"Gang Neighborhoods"? Is this how you characterise other communities, in caps, no less?
I live in Pedro, in a neighborhood with gang activity. I see new RSP tags on my neighbors' homes every week. I have helicopters hovering over my block on a regular basis. Where are those kids going to school now? Ponte Vista is right down the street from a housing project. It's already in a neighborhood with gang activity.
IMBG has a point that you may not realise. Most San Pedrans either turn a blind eye or are wholly ignorant of the white, born-in-Pedro, gang members living on that end of town. Back when I was in high school, I had friends who were with SPS (San Pedro Stoners), and the stories I could tell about what those white, jocky gangsters with middle-class families get up to would shock you.
Janice Hahn definitely needs to do a study of what Bisno is planning at Ponte Vista. He absolutely ruined a perfectly good housing project in Venice leaving 795 empty apartments and 795 families tryng to make it in a over-priced housing market. Ten years later these desperately needed units are still standing empty, while people sleep on the beaches and behind business on Lincoln Bl. No matter his promises he is not the least bit interested in Seniors, disabled or the 'workforce.' The Senior units which were promised in Venice never materialized. He abandoned the property after illegally tearing down historic buildings and moved on the Chase Knolls in the Valley. Here he tried to remove tenants to make condos so he could make money while others became homeless. Get involved and fight anything he attempt to ruin in your neighborhood. He brings destruction and pollution and money only for himself.
