I'm really tied up getting ready for this Sunday's Patssi Valdez show up at Angels Gate, but I wanted to throw this Daily Breeze story from a few days back into the hopper here:

I can just see the debate leading up to this.
"Our consultants tell us that we just don't have enough bright lights and artificial noise in this harbor. What can we do to package the sense-numbing cacophony of the world's largest industrial port and present it at eye level to the millions of car drivers we expect to attract to Pedro every year?"
"Well, whatever we do, we need to make it really blingy and ostentatious, like one of those new casinos on the Vegas Strip. Otherwise how will people know that they're in San Pedro? Like a big tower with a bunch of lights and music, or a replica of the Great Pyramids with lights and music, or a mile-long rock climbing wall. With, you know, lights and music. Something like that."
"I hear you, but we're going to have to scale it down. There'll be plenty of time for that stuff when we get started on the hotels and the malls. We need something that'll fit on the part of Harbor Boulevard that we haven't widened yet. Any ideas?"
"How about a fountain?"
[Uncomfortable silence]
"...with lights and music!"
[Murmurs of approval, then spontaneous applause]
"Do we have a few million dollars in the budget for that? We do? Awesome! All in favor? Opposed? Motion carries."
"Next on the agenda, a motion to produce an informational pamphlet entitled 'Parks: Are You Kidding? Those Things Cost Money!' All in favor?"
Yeah, I'm totally blindsided by this fountain thing. Was it announced anywhere previously? Discussed, anything? I'm obviously not against "new stuff" in town on principle, but this strikes me as extreme and unexpected.
You're right though. It's even more difficult to take the "anti-open spavce/park" arguments from the Port and various development advocates, if they support the huge cost and total uselessness of this water feature/white elephant/bad joke.
It would be cool if it was cheorgraphed to Brujera, though... I might be able to live with that.
