Doing the Backstroke in the Lake of Fire

Although the 1st Thursday crowd got a sneak preview, tonight is the real opening for Doing the Backstroke in the Lake of Fire, the final exhibition in the Walled City space. It's one of the best shows that we've ever had in the space, and it's not to be missed.

This show was inspired by a rather unwelcome gift received by artist Edith Abeyta from a temporary co-worker, a $25 dollar gift certificate, with an accompanying letter encouraging her to accept Jesus lest she be cast into the lake of fire. Edith, along with artists Porous Walker and Rheim Alkadhi have crafted a series of works that are in their words " An examination of the feverish Christian fundamentalism that has taken over the political and personal landscape in the U.S. and a conceptual celebration of hedonism and sin (if you believe in that sort of thing)."

The exhibition's opening will be accompanied by a soundtrack meticulously crafted by Bob Tower. Booze & snacks will be served. Some of the art is free if you're willing to dig for it yourself.
