Enjoy your damn weekend

So maybe you missed the last grunion run, but that's no reason to stay home and cry this weekend.

  • There's an open house at San Pedro's own mysterious Red Man Lodge on Friday night. Who are the Red Men and what goes on in their lodge? Go to 543 Shepard Street, Friday from 6-9 PM and find out.
  • This weekend has two seperate Juneteenth events going down in San Pedro. For those not in the know, Juneteenth is the annual celebration of the ending of slavery in the great state of Texas.
  • On Friday, June 16, at 8PM, there will be a Juneteenth Comedy Slam at the Warner Grand Theatre. It's sponsored by the Harry Bridges Institute and the ILWU, but I've got no details beyond that. It's $20 to get in.
  • On Saturday, June 17th, 10AM - 6PM, there will be a Juneteenth celebration in Building H here at the Angels Gate Cultural Center. Featuring displays, vendors, singing, dancing poetry and more, it's your opportunity to learn about Juneteenth and enjoy yourself.
  • The final Sixth Street Idol competition at the Warner Grand. $1000 is at stake, and I've heard some "interesting" remarks about the quality of the contestants. While the contestants must sacrifice their dignity and self respect, it only costs you $15 at the door to get in. Little Idols" will perform at 7 p.m. - showcase performance for a show "Lil Idols" later this summer. Contestants begin at 8 p.m. and include: D-Boyz, S1, Stephanie Stramotas, Pitch Lang, Ridicule, Leo, Crystl Alvarez, Penthouse Playas, Traxx, Derrick Hudson, Chris Vasquez, Eric Wersky, Ji Yan Han, Angelina Valdez and 2Face.
