While we're on the subject of gentrification
Since it looks like the black bean is about to be sacrificed upon the altar of Starbucks, bringing on a new age in Pedro, I figured it might be my grand public service of the day to point all 1.5 of this blog's readers to to an excellent article on gentrification in Los Angeles in the LA Weekly. The article doesn't cover Pedro directly, but it's definitely of relevance to any neighborhood going through the growing pains of gentrification.
The section on Manhattan Beach is excellent and particularily relevant to the changes that are and will be coming to San Pedro. It has some insightful quotes from Garrison Frost of The Aesthetic, especially this gem about having to relocate to Lomita in order to finally own his own home:
“One thing about the beach cities: It drives out its children,” he said. “I’m a classic example.”
The article is accompanied by a sister piece called "Five Signs You're Gentrifying", which is equally excellent. Pedro is full of artists who are in full mine canary more, and I think the ice cream place opening up next to Walled City is going to serve gelato as well. That's two out of five - anyone seen any new ornamental grasses, horsetail or subtrim around town lately?
LA Observed, while raving about the article, pointed out this excellent Onion article "I'm the Only One Trying to Genrify My Neighborhood", providing a deep insight into the subconcious mind of your future neighbor.

Just a thought. The innevitable megabuilding along North Harbor will serve a future need. Picture the 7-story, bulky structures "walling us off from the waterfront." How well they will serve the folks living just west of Beacon as a Blast Wall when the Port blows up!
I never thought of it that way. It's yet another reason to build in reinforced concrete heavy brutalist style in Pedro. Every home a bomb shelter and every condo a blast wall!
