Quiet 1st Thursday tomorrow
Looks like tomorrow's 1st Thursday is gonna be a real sleeper. 7th Street has gotten really quiet, as several key artists have either moved out or gone into hibernation. There's some interesting new folks on the street, but it doesn't look like they'll be open. Walled City should return to participation in October, but right now all of us are knee deep in the Contemplating Apocalypse show at the Brewery Project, which opens Saturday night.
It looks like even the excellent Warschaw Gallery (currently the best gallery in downtown) is going to be closed. Judging by their schedule they may be in installation for the Saturday opening of their upcoming show, The Collaborators. This Saturday is the beginning of the art season in Los Angeles, and is the one night out of the year that is must do for gallery hopping. More on that later.
Other visiting the always fun Loft at 4th & Mesa, the other thing worth seeing is Peggy Reavey's show on 7th Street. She's rented the place next to her husband's architecture firm and will be open to the public tomorrow.
In "Future of 1st Thursday" news, there are several organisations and individuals who are actively working to "bring order to the galaxy", as my father used to say. From my perspective, 1st Thursday has fallen right off the map, and the aggressive landlording on 7th Street may have provided a fatal nudge that will be difficult to recover from.
Addendum - I just was reminded that Angels Gate Studio Artist Jon Nakamura will be having a show in the gallery at The Loft. He's a grab bag of novel ideas and anything he does should not be missed. As The Loft is really only open on 1st Thursday, I strondly advise that you make your way there if you can. His most recent project has been a huge (about 6'x6') latch-hook rug portrait of ice skater/proxy kneecapper/celebrity boxer Tonya Harding. Who can resist a peek at that?
