Mario Denalo part III
Carol and I were at her studio at Angel's Gate on Saturday afternoon when the Coast Guard airlifted Denalo's body from the shore to a spot of grass about 25 yards from building H. Kind of unnerving and very sad, especially when they brought the distraught family members up to identify the body.
An LAPD officer who Carol spoke to identified Denalo only as "a young man," and said that his family had reported him missing as they had not heard from him in over 24 hours. As if being a cop isn't difficult enough, he went on to tell her that he knew the family, and had recently attended a Denalo family member's wedding.
All in all, a grim afternoon up at Angel's Gate.
---
Denalo was found on the Western end of the park, but as everyone reading this probably knows, Sunken City is probably even more treacherous. Once you're out there there are no fences to climb or brush to maneuver through. You can literally stroll unfettered right off the edge of the cliff.
What's surprising, as you watch kids lugging case after case of beer into Sunken City every Friday and Saturday night, is that more people aren't found on those rocks at the bottom of the cliff (and that LAPD basically turns a blind eye to kids getting hammered right on the wide open edge of a 120 foot cliff). It should be officially recognized somehow as the world's most deadly party spot.
Though that would just draw more kids to it...
