Food for thought re: LA Waterfront
A Laist post this morning contained this quote from a LA Daily News article about downtown's Grand Avenue Project. It reminds me of the kind of attitude that we need to see regarding the LA Waterfront project (from the link is it now being called the San Pedro Waterfront?), but that we're definitely not seeing yet.
"This is not a `downtown project,"' said Carol Schatz, president and chief executive officer of the Central City Association of Los Angeles.
"This is a project of regional, if not international, significance. "Most importantly, it becomes a destination that anchors our cultural spine and our civic center area, an area we should take pride in as the seat of our local democracy."
Replace the word "downtown" with "San Pedro". That's where we need to be for this to really benefit both the region and San Pedro itself.

Grandiloquent huckster garbage. And singularly inappropriate for anything built on the San Pedro waterfront. What we need is organic (as in economics, not as in vegetables) development built in response to local needs as they arise.
Trying to build some "world-class" tourist Valhalla in San Pedro would be the worst kind of folly. Please, those of you who harbor these Kubla Khan fantasies, take some Thorazine and forget about it.
Fixing Pedro's waterfront will be much more challenging than plopping some giant blob of starchitecture at the foot of Sixth Street and then sitting back and counting the tourist dollars, but if it's done right it will be much more rewarding. Are we ready to get real?

A project like Pacific Creek Park would change just about everything in and around downtown San Pedro.
It makes Herb Zimmer's golfcart waterfront village look downright sane. What else is there really to say about it?
What would really benefit the waterfront and San Pedro (not developers and cruise ships!) is the improvement of our crappy air and port security, both still abysmal. The air has gotten much worse in the past five years or so, and I'm tired of breathing this shit and wiping the soot off my windows. Spend $$ on this! The latest clean air plan, if any of it gets implemented, is weak.
Went to the Pacific Creek park website. At first thought it was a pretty good idea. Then followed the links to the Richard's affiliated website. Look under "New Deals" and you'll see the guy's huckstering for a living. Took particular interest in this 'new deal': http://www.bogusbeauty.com/ . The only reason there isn't more outrage about the statements made on this site is the owner is clearly koo koo for Cocoa Puffs.
