Art on the Waterfront this Saturday
It's Art on the Waterfront time again. Last year's festival was a big success, so the Port asked Angels Gate and the San Pedro Art Association to do it again. I've curated, along with Video Art Curator Anne Bray of Freewaves, FR8, a much expanded version of the commissioned container art installations that we did last year - This year we have a total of fifteen commissioned artists and selected nine video artists.I've been posting a ton of photos over at the Center's blog, and there's a Flickr set devoted to the festival as well - you can see a lot of images of the artists preparing their work there.

The Port of Los Angeles is holding its second annual "Art on the Waterfront" event on the L.A. Waterfront in San Pedro on Saturday, May 12, from 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The festival, along the Main Channel of the nation's number one containerport, is free and open to the public.
Produced by Angels Gate Cultural Center and San Pedro Arts Association, Art on the Waterfront brings together a broad collection of artists to showcase their talents. Activities for the day include art and video installations in cargo containers called "FR8", an artisan fair, chalk art exhibitions, skateboarding demonstrations, artist-led children's activities and the team from Radio Disney. Food vendors will also be on-hand.
The festival also will mark the first major Port event where free trees will be given to the public as part of the Port's efforts to support the Million Trees Los Angeles campaign. Attendees can take two, one-gallon trees home for free.
Free shuttles will usher attendees from the parking lots at 22nd Street & Miner and 22nd Street & Sampson Street to the event on Harbor Boulevard and 1st Street. The Red Car can also be utilized for visitors who want to park in Ports O' Call Village to the south of Harbor Blvd. Parkway or the Cruise Ship Promenade to the North, and rides are free.

Take the 110 South to Gaffey, exit left on Gaffey Street, Make a left at 1st Street, only five blocks to the festival

How come in radio adverts for the festival(e.g. kcrw) they never mention "San Pedro"? They say "at the end of the 110 S". Not that anyone should care what the rest of the outside world thinks of SP, but it would have been nice to strengthen the association between our city and the arts scene in the public view, at least to bring more patronage down to our local artists and art scene.
where are the bike racks located along the channel?
Speaking of bikes: Calamari, there is talk of drafting you for the four-man relay race downtown on Friday night (5/11). We're trying to get a Pedro team together. Registration starts at 7:30 at Fourth and Flower, race starts at 9:00 and should be over by 10:30. Interested?
anon 1 - I'm not sure why the radio ad you heard doesn't mention San Pedro. There are two different radio ads out there - it may have more to do with conserving words or time than anything else. I'm sure the festival details are a mouthful.
anon 2 - There are bike racks along the promenade, I think. There's also a ton of chain link to lock to inside the Berth itself.
IMBG -I'm working late Friday for the festival. I'd love to race, but I can't make it this time. Tag me for a relay anytime in the future, though.
